Your tyres are the only point of contact between your vehicle and the road. The way they wear down isn't random — it's a direct reflection of inflation, wheel alignment, and suspension health. By learning to read tread wear patterns, you can catch mechanical issues before they turn into costly repairs.
Common Wear Patterns and What They Mean
Inspect your tyre tread regularly and look out for these patterns:
- Wear on Both Edges (Under-inflation): If the outer shoulders are worn but the center is intact, your tyre is under-inflated. This forces the edges to bear the load, increasing rolling resistance and heat build-up.
- Wear in the Center (Over-inflation): If the center rib is worn down more than the shoulders, you are over-inflating your tyres. This reduces tyre contact area, hurting grip and braking performance.
- Wear on One Side (Misalignment): If only the inner or outer edge of the tyre is worn (known as camber wear), your wheel alignment is off. This drags the tyre sideways as you drive.
- Cupping or Scalloping (Suspension Issues): Diagonal cups or dips in the tread suggest your shock absorbers or struts are worn out. The tyre is bouncing off the road instead of tracking smoothly.
The 2-Minute Tread Depth Test
You can check your tread depth using a simple coin test or by inspecting the built-in Tread Wear Indicator (TWI) bars. These are small rubber bars located in the main grooves of your tyres. When the tread wears down level with these bars (at 1.6mm), the tyres are legally worn out and highly unsafe, especially in wet weather.
